Statement on 2/23 Incident
Shortly after 7 p.m. on Friday, Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a report of an incident at the landfill. Upon arrival, the Fire Department assisted the landfill with a brief leachate incident resulting from a mechanical failure of a small, high-pressure hose in connection with on-site leachate treatment and storage. One employee was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. A limited amount of leachate (less than 20 gallons) emptied out of the ruptured hose on to soil within the lined-footprint of the landfill. LA County Fire HazMat, in conjunction with Health HazMat, were on scene to help oversee the cleanup operations. The leachate was immediately solidified and collected. There were no releases of leachate to stormwater or groundwater.
